Citizen Eco-Drive Proximity watch notifies iPhone owners without betraying their nerd status

Citizen EcoDrive Proximity watch notifies iPhone owners without betraying their nerd status

It's hard to deny that Bluetooth watches usually lack the social graces you need when dressing to impress. Citizen doesn't want to leave you a binary choice between technology and poshness, however. The company's upcoming Eco-Drive Proximity watch has all the respectability of an analog steel timepiece, but it quietly syncs to an iPhone 4S (or newer) through Bluetooth 4.0. Miss a call, get a message or approach a meeting, and the seconds hand will point to a word on the dial indicating what needs attention -- there's no broadcasting your geek credentials to everyone in the room. The iPhone syncs its time with the watch if you're so inclined, and a search mode will ping the handset if it's lost under the couch. Expect to pay $550, or about as much as many mid-tier quartz watches, when the Proximity goes on sale in the fall. It's certainly not a trivial price next to other Bluetooth watches, but the public acceptance factor may be more than worth the premium.

Nick Jr Draw & Play for iPhone and iPad review

Nick Jr Draw & Play is an iPhone and iPad by Nickelodeon that lets kids can team up with Dora the explorer, Diego, Team Umizoomi and the Bubble Guppies to create amazing artwork -- and have fun! It features an easy to use interact with 8 different brushes for drawing and painting, 60 animated stickers, effects such as fireworks and magic wands, parental controls, and more.

One of the things I really like about Nick Jr Draw & Play is that when you draw on a coloring book page, it forces you to stay on the lines without also automatically filling everything in for you. For example, in the screenshot above, once I start coloring in Dora's hair, all of my strokes made (without lifting my finger) were kept inside the outline of Dora's hair, even if my finger went outside of the lines. This is such a great feature for kids since staying in the lines when coloring on an iPad is much harder than with coloring with real crayons on real paper.

Nick Jr Draw & Play is packed with many different artistic options for your kids. The mediums they can draw and color with include chalk, crayons, markers, pencils, spray paint, and paint brushes. There are also stickers, animation buttons, greeting cards, and more for your child to get creative with. They can also choose to start with a blank canvas or one of the drawing from the coloring book that feature many Nickelodeon characters from the shows Dora the explorer, Diego, Team Umizoomi and the Bubble Guppies.

When you child first plays Nick Jr Draw and Play, s/he will be guided through a animated tutorial that teaches them how to use it. Personally, I think it's not necessary as everything is pretty intuitive, especially for kids. Luckily, there's an option to skip it. Unfortunately, even if you skip the tutorial, it will start over the next time you launch the app and there isn't an option to disable it in the settings.

The good

  • Easy to use interface with 8 different brushes for drawing and painting
  • Colors stay in the lines when you color
  • Dora the explorer, Milli, Geo and Bot of Team Umizoomi, and the Bubble Guppies coloring pages
  • 60 Animated Stickers
  • Fireworks, Splatter Tops, Magic Wands and Surprise Blocks to create amazing effects in your pictures
  • eCards
  • Picture ideas to help jump-start your child's imagination
  • Animated Tutorials
  • Airplay
  • Sharing for parents via email and Facebook
  • Parental Controls

The bad

  • Tutorial cannot be disabled and plays every time you launch the app
  • Separate purchases for iPhone and iPad instead of universal
  • Can only undo one action

The conclusion

Nick Jr Draw & Play is a great iPhone and iPad app for kids to draw, color, and create with their favorite Nickelodeon characters. At first I was skeptical that it was going to be a little lame because Nickelodeon knows that kids would ask for it because of the characters, but I realized very quickly that I was wrong. Nick Jr Draw & Play is filled with features that are sure to keep your child entertained over and over again.

Angola votes, Dos Santos favourite to win

Angolans voted Friday in the country's third election since independence, with President Jose Eduardo dos Santos expected to extend his grip on power in the oil-rich nation despite a resurgent opposition.

Most of the more than 10,000 polling stations set up at schools across the country, twice the size of France, shut on time and vote counting started immediately. The electoral authority said some polls stayed open late, without elaborating.

Voting saw a few hiccups but was a dramatic improvement on the last elections in 2008 when the ballot had to be extended into a second day due to chaos at polling stations.

Pedro Verona Pires, chief of the African Union's observer team, described the poll's organisation as "satisfactory", adding that "the voters' state of mind is good".

"Everyone agrees that the elections this year were better organised than in 2008," Pires, who is also the former president of Cape Verde, told AFP.

The opposition Unita party had expressed fears that its supporters would be turned away from the ballot box due to problems with the voter roll, while not all of its monitors were allowed into the polling stations.

Voters were picking lawmakers for the 220-seat parliament. The leader of the the party that takes the vote automatically becomes the head of state.

There is little doubt that Dos Santos will extend his 33-year reign. His People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) took more than 80 percent of the vote in 2008 polls deemed legitimate by observers despite the troubles at the polling stations.

Dos Santos has used his decades in office to centralise most power in his hands. His family, particularly his daughter Isabel, has capitalised on Angola's oil boom to build an international business empire.

He has also poured billions into rebuilding Angola after 41 years of warfare, with 14 years of armed struggle against colonial power Portugal turning into a 27-year civil war after independence in 1975.

He has used his dominance over state media to showcase roads, dams, schools and clinics built since the fighting ended a decade ago.

Life in Angola has by most measures improved.

The economy over the past decade was among the fastest-growing in the world. Per capita gross domestic product was nearly $1,900 in 2009 -- triple that of 2000. Life expectancy went up from about 40 in 1980 to above 51 now.

The main opposition Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) argues that the economic gains have mainly benefited an elite showered with oil riches, while 55 percent of the population still live in dire poverty.

Party leader Isaias Samakuva has criticised the electoral process, saying many names on the voter roll could not be authenticated.

"I did my civic duty, even if we are still not satisfied with the electoral process," he said after voting.

After taking only 10 percent of the vote in 2008, the former rebel movement needs a strong showing to prove that it remains relevant in modern politics.

But that task has been complicated by a dramatic split in April.

The charismatic Abel Chivukuvuku broke away to form the Casa party along with a top-level MPLA defector, smaller opposition groups and prominent figures in civil society.

Casa has made in-roads by courting young voters with promises of jobs and better living conditions, striking a chord with the youth who over the past year have staged a series of unprecedented protests against Dos Santos.

Diogo Miguel Bernardo, 31, unemployed, who was turned away because he had registered in a different part of the country, said he would have voted Casa.

"Casa is a party that can bring change to the country. We can't have a situation with the same person in power for one, two, three, 30 years."

Preliminary results will be released from Saturday afternoon, the head of the National Electoral Commission said. Final results were only expected next week.

Rice, McCain criticize Obama foreign policies without mentioning bin Laden

Condoleezza Rice was a Republican National Convention crowd favorite. Rice and Sen. John McCain hammered Obama on defense spending, and foreign policy. But no mention was made of the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Republicans delivered a scathing indictment of President Barack Obama's national security policy, although the Democrat's aggressive approach has often been compared to that of his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.

Defense and foreign policy, largely a footnote during the first two days of the Republican convention, were the core of speeches by Sen. John McCain, Obama's presidential rival in 2008, and Condoleezza Rice, Bush's secretary of state. Neither uttered Obama's name Wednesday night in their prime-time remarks, but the target of their criticism was clear.

"For four years, we've drifted away from our proudest traditions of global leadership," McCain said. "We've let the challenges we face, both at home and abroad, become harder to solve."

He faulted Obama for cuts to projected defense spending, a timetable for withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan and an unwillingness to use more U.S. military force to stop the months of bloodshed in Syria. McCain drew the loudest applause when he criticized the government over suspected national security leaks.

Rice acknowledged the nation's weariness from the two long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that Bush started but said, "If we are not inspired to lead again, one of two things will happen ? no one will lead and that will foster chaos ? or others who do not share our values will fill the vacuum. ... We do not have a choice. We cannot be reluctant to lead ? and one cannot lead from behind."

Republicans have seized on the words "leading from behind" that an unnamed Obama adviser used in a New Yorker article, even though the idea is to empower others while avoiding the perception of unilateral U.S. action.

Rice recalled standing at her desk the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, and learning of the terrorist attacks. She made no mention of Osama bin Laden and Obama's order as commander in chief for the Navy SEALS' operation that killed the terrorist leader.

"Our friends and allies must be able to trust us," she said. "From Israel to Poland to the Philippines to Colombia and across the world ? they must know that we are reliable and consistent and determined. ... Our military capability and technological advantage will be safe in Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's hands."

National security has barely warranted a mention at the convention as jobs and the economy remain the dominant issues for the electorate. The short shrift also reflects a political reality of the past four years ? Republicans have made little headway in challenging Obama's aggressive security policies.

Obama has waged a secret campaign against Al Qaeda in two countries ? one on the Arab Peninsula, the other on Africa's east coast. Navy SEALs took out bin Laden in Pakistan in May 2011 and armed drones have pursued Al Qaeda terrorists within the country, degrading the group.
